Staff cuts at MS have likely killed FSX and MSTS-2.

Once again our hopes for a replacement Train Sim from MS have been dashed.

Personally, I am not going to hit the panic button yet. I may be in denial, I don't know, but until I hear the official word, I'll believe/hope that it will happen.

That being said, I'm not going to hold my breath either way, and I'm continuing my current projects as if everything is normal.

I think we just got a lifeline- http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-10148168-75.html

Although Microsoft is cutting jobs, the software maker apparently isn't axing any major products as part of its cost-cutting moves. ............Thus far, Microsoft has announced plans to cut only one product, its Windows Live OneCare security service..............The company apparently isn't cutting any entire products as part of the new cost cuts either, though it did say it would try to better prioritize its investments.

Hi, Reading on one overseas forum today it looks like MSTS-X is dead at present according to a member of the design team working on the new sim. Firstly let me say I feel very sorry for the people at ACES who have lost their jobs and to anyone losing their employment at the moment not good. Even though MSTS-X may not be released we still have one hell of a sim in MSTS and thanks to people like Russ,Chris, Brian, Alan and others who give their time and effort in releasing new Routes and upgrading others we still have a great TS for which we appreciate. I think for the average user of MSTS the non release of MSTS-X isn't a huge disappointment as I for one am happy with what we have to others it may be.Regards,
Robert.

Speaking from the point of view of someone that has been playing around with the design of a train sim....... There will unlikely ever be a trainsim that will be very much better than MSTS. Here I am talking about MSTS installed using Yuri's "Installing MSTS again" and with MSTSbin. There will be somewhat better editors say more automation. But all the same route building will NEVER be easy. In the trainsim itself some what better "physics" will almost certainly be availible but I have found playing with the "eng" files can produce a performance that is quite reasonable. Amount of detail is entirely a matter of proccessing power and what the user will put up with. The greater the level of detail the more difficult the route is to build and from the programs point of view the LESS distance you can see ahead.
The more realistic and intelligent the traffic is the more proccesing power it uses and there is very little to spare after doing the terrain and scenery.
There will NEVER be enough proccesing power........ sssssiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhhh.
I of course could go on but I hope you will get my drift.
In spite of what I say here I am very much enjoying building the sim.
