Another Gem coming off the factory floor for the Northern Main Route.
Who says TSM is a defunct program?
A few more locos and period Rolling stock and we should be able to get some good activities going.
Edit Latest Shots
Just have to add the number Plates,a few cab things and Animate the rods then on to the Tender.

Very nice Russell. :D :D :D
Quick question. What is the purpose of the "Camel humps" on steam locos?
The green one has no extra parts like the yellow one.
My guess is that they are some sort of pressure vessel.
Cheers Geoff.

Nice :)

I was thinking about converting mine to MSTS. Except it's completely wrong (compound version, in black livery  ). That looks damn nice though! Looking forward to it :)

That's where the sand is kept on all Baldwin loco's. It's the same with the Na's, but they have one for each direction.

Anyway nice models Russell :D

The one at the front is as K163 says for the sand but the rear dome is where the regulator steam is taken, as its at the highest part of the boiler and lessens the possibility of water in the steam delivery.
Water in the steam delivered to the cylinders is bad and causes hydraulic lock or priming which can result in bent rods and other expensive damage.

Just another bit of info -

a couple of the main reasons that the 'yanks' adopted sand domes on top of the boilers - firstly, the heat from the boiler kept the sand dry, and the increased height enabled the gravity flow of sand more easily and reliably to the rails when needed!!!

But, the trade-off was they were much harder to fill as compared to the above footplate, in-cab or below footplate mounted sand boxes of local (ie British influenced) locomotives.

I never could find the answer re the purpose of the domes until K163's answer, when I looked for reference to sand I found the info on the net.
It all makes sense why they are at the highest point on the loco.
Actually I though initially K163 was just pulling my leg when I read "thats were the sand is kept" due to my reference to"camel humps".
So how do they fill the humps with sand?

Bucket or through a pipe that is gravity fed from an overhead hopper.

Hi K163,
It all makes sence now.
Maybe I have a twisted sence of humour.
Cheers Geoff.

What is it with you Mexicans and the incessant need to paint locos weird colours? Give me a coat of black oil and some heavy weathering a'la a western division garratt and I'm a happy guy!

In all seriousness though, they look bleedin' fantastic Russ. They might even be enough to pull me away from RE for a little while.

Shipping the last of my house guests off to France today and my wife is off to visit youngest daughter to settle in at uni this weekend.

There are a couple of issues with the brakes based on latest relevations I need to get resolved, but otherwise its in testing and should get the eng files out this weekend.

i second the need for some black ones for the locos that lasted into that era.

Just looking at what I have on the simple versions, the record shows obviosly new cylinders 18.5" x 26" with new boilers at 180 psi

I wonder if they also became LHD at the same time??????

Can confirm that they were always right hand drive - even when rebuilt with larger boiler and as simple engines.

Russ,

Do you have the larger boiler dimensions?
