Good to see you having a go Darcy. It might help to get as many loco pics as possible to compare the dimensions. Capturing the subtle side of loco building can be a challenge, but you appear to be on the way.
I have run into a problem though. which anyone is welcome to help with ideas. when i open the loco in shapeveiwer the screen stays black i a message says "Error 5 – Invalid procedure call or argument" so does any one know what to do?????
Darcy,
Do not give up yet. If you would like me to have a look at the model and see if I can pick the problem, please send it to me. PM me for my address if you want to go that way.
Cheers

Darcy,
Like Allan says, don't give up. You have the makings of a fine modeller, and every TSM modeller knows the frustrations of things going wrong. It's all part of the challenge.
Have you checked the files that you are using as your textures? It could be that the filename has spaces in it. For some reason, MSTS doesn't like it when you have spaces in the texture filename.
So for your textures, they'd need to be named something like (only as an example) vrjclass1 instead of vr j class 1. I'm not sure how it handles underscores though. I haven't touched my TSM projects in over 4 years.

Chrome bullet and myself had a problem like this and it turned out the Texture names were too long.
Try to keep the names no longer than 8 letters plus the .tga or .bmp prefix.
I have had another bit of bad luck with my J's. My TSM doesn't create a ENG.file when I export my locos to the Sim so what I did was copy the SRV D3 639 ENG.file and changed the any thing that said D3639srb to J541vgr and I have had no luck on the Sim the picture below shows what has happened.
The consist that I have made appears in the list of locos to select once on MSTS but when I select it and hit start its doesn't let me go any further. Does anyone have any ideas?
I might add I have got the tender to work I had it on a train with no probs.
Hi Darcy,
Hope you asked permission to use that .eng file.
When you are in TSM, and in the "Create Train Simulator Object" dialogue box, is the "New .eng or .wag file" clicked?
If you have to use the .eng file from another loco, there are a number of lines of code to alter that refer to the specific loco. Obviously, there are also a hundred or more lines that refer to the weight, tractive effort, lighting, braking, steam generation etc, etc, etc, that also require modification.
Even if you get the .eng file to export to the Sim, you still need to address all these other factors because the "default" .eng file will probably be nothing like your loco with braking systems different and all the characteristics of the loco will be different.
You are on the cusp of the "interesting" part of loco construction, heh, heh.
Cheers
Allan
I have exported J541 to the Sim and deleted the D3 engine file and made “new .eng or .wag File.”
When I open up the consist menu. I still get the issue of the loco not showing up on the screen but the name is in the list.
In this case I put a T411 in front of the J to try and see if I could just get it to show. So i open MSTS and select the loco and hit start. The route loads half way or so before I get the error “Can’t add car J541vgr (uid: 200001) to world.
So once again i’m at a loss as to what to do.
The (uid: 200001) indicates that MSTS is having problems loading with the second item in your consist (If it was the first item you would get an uid: 200000 error). In your case I presume that would be the tender. To confirm, try another tender in your consist.
I also have a loco that is currently generating this error in MSTS. I have had this error occur before and it was related to the geometry of the model. To track the cause I exported my model with only 6 wheels, 2 bogies and 1 body shape and the loco loaded in MSTS without error so I knew those parts were OK. Then I attached one part at a time in the modelling program and exported the .S file and tested in MSTS. By this process of elimination I found that when I attached the handrails the UID error reappeared. This then tells me there is a problem with the handrail shape. I have had this happen before and ended up having to rebuild the handrails, as I could not work out what was wrong the original handrail shape.
You could also try and run Paul Gausden’s Shape File Fixer program over your .S file. It’s saved one of my models once and you can download it from train-sim.com. It’s called sfix1.zip.
I have been trying Animation on the Wheels and again hit another problem. I have entered the correct 8 animation frames in the F2 menu. I have also selected 9 animation frames in "project properties." when i go to export it to MSTS I get this. I also have Checked all of the shapes and they have a "Part Parent" so i'm lost .
and this on shapeveiwer
The wheels and Valve gear is animated and works on Shapeveiwer so i just need to get the frame under the boiler again???

Darcy,
Try clicking the arrows to highlight every different parts, Then go to Edit then click on "Part Properties" and make sure that all parts have a part parent, If you see a part and it has no part parent, that should answer the question to help fix that problem

Correct one of the parts does not have a parent.
you need to check each part as described above.
Some people parent to a part that is parented in return to the main.
Ie Dome> boiler> Main
I just parent everything to the main.
This works for me.
I would like to be able to make a sound up for a Turbo Generator for my J, but i was wondering if i can have it so i can turn the sound on and off when i want. Is this possible?
It should be possible. Check out the available triggers in the following link. You may have to lose the horn, sanding or some other sound to enable your sound.
Hey guys, here's an update of my VR/preserved J classes. I have mad up some new textures for J541. I still have a lot of textures to covert but heres a taster as to whats coming!
Old textured J541 J541s new front! The New Oil Burning Tender.
I'm still after Cabveiw photographs. So if you want to do your part to help get these going, please send me a PM!
Looking good Darcy. I'll see what I can find in my photo collection for cabview photos as I might have some. Failing that I'll get some next time I'm at Maldon.
