I would appreciate it if someone could suggest a remedy to the following problem that has only just developed. The computer operates on Vista and I have had no problems until now. Whenever I now, however, run msts, it operates correctly until I get the following on ther screen "setting up simulator user interface". At this point nothing further happens for a few minutes and then the msts screen closes. I have tried this on a number of routes and the same thing happens, making me believe that it may be a problem with the program, but I am unsure. I would appreciate it if someone could help me with this one.
What changed in MSTS? If it was working one day and stopped working the next day something must have changed. Did you add any routes, rolling stock, etc?
A quick google search using ‘msts setting up simulator user interface’ found a number of hits. I suggest you have a look at these and see if they point you in the right direction. Just from having a quick look I see that having to many consists could be a possible cause.
Thankyou very much for your advice, it pointed me in the right direction. Up to that point I had tried everything except reinstalling msts, even msts-bin had been reinstalled incase the problem was there. After your advice I deleted all the consists and tested the system with a couple of test consists and the whole system worked again. I had probally crossed the line on the number of consists that msts can handle.....when I checked that folder there had been 582 of them. Amazing how the number of consists can creep up on you over time. So thankyou once again...I would have never thought that this could have been the problem
Good to hear you got it working. Also thanks for replying. Your confirmation that to many consists were the cause of the error will help others that search for the same string.
If you have a lot of routes and rolling stock you may want to look at using Train Store, which you can download from www.trainsim.com. Filename is trnstr32.zip.
I have never used Trainstore, but do use Routes On/Off from this site: http://kcsinc.biz/ Select the routes that you want to turn off and it changes the name of the route .trk file which makes it invisble to msts.

With only one route selected, MSTS starts in less than 5 seconds as it doesn't have to load all the routes and their required consists, trains etc. I currently have 675 consists and have never had a problem with routes not working ( not counting those that I mess around with )
Hi All, As a route developer and model builder, Trainstore is a pain for me. I need all my models etc available not just those that are part of an Activity, and I certainly do not need to be having to create Activities just to keep models available to me. I am constantly in and out of MSTS/TSM/PSP/Shape Viewer and having restrictions on MSTS is the last thing I need.
In my MSTS folder, I have a folder called "Old Routes" and routes that I seldom use are "moved" (not copied) there. It only takes seconds and solves all the problems and more importantly, it does not create other problems.
The above solution also seems to be excellent, but my method does not require me to start another application, nor does it require modification to any files.
Hello This is my first post I had the same problem of Trainsimulator stalling and shutting down until someone put me onto Trainstore. Since then I have had no further trouble.
Like sarfan39, I move little-used routes (and consists and stock) into another directory branch under "\Program Files\". The default routes are moved back when I install a new route then back to my "Program Files\Microsoft Games Hold\Train Simulator\" directory they go. Since I almost exclusively run Australian routes and stock, this also keeps the consist count down (although I am up near the 500 mark, so I may have to do some culling there one day).
